TIME TO GET THE SHOVEL AND DIG OUT THE DREAM YOU'VE BURIED!

 What Dreams/Goals Have You buried?

I recently decided to go through the journals I kept as a teenager and wow what bitter sweet memories.  Reading my journals caused me to realise that somehow, somewhere along the road of life, I packed my dreams in a box, put them aside and later buried them.  See when I was younger all I wanted to do was write songs, poetry, sing and dance and I wouldn’t say I was spectacularly brilliant at them but I loved to sing, I wrote amateur poetry and danced and took drama at school. I held on to these dreams through my teenage years but something happened along the way, because that girl who believed she could be and do anything she wanted or dreamed of somehow disappeared. I feel so alienated from her. Where did she go? Where did I bury my dreams and why?

When I look at myself in the mirror all I see now is a young adult who is scared to dream, afraid to fail, scared to try. Everyday I wake up and choke that little girl. I give myself a hundred and ten reasons why it’s a bad idea to go after these dreams. I have become my own worst enemy! If I am not unfairly comparing myself to others, I am talking down at myself. I tell myself, ‘you can’t write or sing, so don’t bother’ or ‘these things are for the people in the world, I am in the world, not of it’ or ‘if I go after these dreams, I will become like the people in the world, I will stop pursuing spiritual living and become prideful and boastful, so to prevent that lets forget about this dream’. HOW DARE YOU!  I want to stare at myself in the mirror and scream ‘HOW DARE YOU!’

Yes, I have seen a lot of gifted and talented men and women in the faith who have become prideful, people raised in the church, who now deny God and have turned to everything worldly. That scares me! I would rather lose my dream, be unhappy, anything than lose my relationship with God or deny God and turn to the world.

But, since when did God say it’s okay to be cowardly and faithless? Since when did God start delighting in people who don’t believe and obey His Word? Didn’t David write poetry? Didn’t he dance and play the harp? And who told me it was okay to compare myself with others? What do I stand to gain in doing that?

You see, because I told myself “I am not good enough, I am not like this person I could never succeed. People will laugh at me in my face and behind my back if they knew this was my dream” I didn’t truly invest the time, resources in developing myself to become better at what I love to do. I buried my dreams, tried to justify it and made no attempt to develop myself in these areas. Instead I settled for singing quietly and timidly in the church choir, “hey at least am still singing, so am serving God!” I settled. “The choir will do”, I reasoned. I was afraid whenever the choir director will ask me to come to the front, take a mic and sing into it.

Paul, Apostle of Jesus said to Timothy “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you”. Then in his second letter to Timothy, it seemed as though Timothy forgot what Paul told him so Paul repeated it again saying “...I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands for the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline”.

If you are like me and have buried your dreams or settled when you know there is more, please I plead with you, don’t give up! Please join me, let us give our dreams a try. Get your shovel and dig up that dream, that vision, that goal. Don’t give up! If we fail, we fail! But if we don’t try, what a great tragedy that will be! I plead with you, yes you! Try...Don’t give up!

I have prayed to God about this and I continue to pray, I ask God for discernment and spirit if wisdom, and his guidance because more than living my dream, I want to live for Him. I want to follow Christ and obey His Word.

*And if you don’t know Christ Jesus and you are reading this blog, I just want to say, the first step to fulfilling your full potential in life starts with Christ. That’s the ultimate truth!

WHAT MY PARENTS FAILED TO TELL ME!

Growing up as a child,
I was told I can do and be anything I dreamed of
Well except for the performing arts
Because “there’s no security and stability in dancing, singing or acting”, I was told.
I was encouraged to study
Work hard
“Keep your head in the books; it will reap a successful harvest in the future”, my mother often whispered.
So I did I as I was told
 I studied
I worked hard
I read and took education seriously.
But there was something they forgot to tell me.
Yes there was something my parents forgot to tell me!

They forgot to tell me
That although education is the key
Courage and faith are what will need to
Enter and stay and stand in a turbulent room
Yes there was something my parents forgot to tell me!

They told me the importance of entering in
But kept silent about what is needed to stay in
And hold on.
Oh yes,
They told me about getting good grades
“Laziness is a bad trait, it will lead you to poverty”, she explained.
“Education means countless opportunities, don’t waste it!” my father exclaimed.
Oh yes
There was something my parents forgot to tell me!

 Education, Funny, Schooling Versus Education
What my parents forgot to say
Was that the education they referred to
Was not the schools and university I attended
No
So far as they were concerned there was only one school
Oh yes
The school of life
What my parents forgot to say
Was that the good grades they wanted me to obtain was not academic qualifications
No!
It was character!
Life itself is the education!
Yes life is the education my parents were referring to!
Work hard!
Study diligently!
Take your education seriously!
Life is education and education is life.
Education was only a metaphor for life
Life!
Life is the best education
Life presents you with tests examinations
Work hard!
Study diligently!
Life shapes character
Life teaches courage and faith
“Education means countless opportunities, don’t waste it!” he exclaimed.
Life means countless opportunities, don’t waste it!

Oh yes,
What my parents failed to tell me!

TEAMWORK: THE STORY OF FOUR VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE.

This is a little story I came across when I was a little girl back in West Africa:

There are four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody balmed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

LESSON FROM THE ANT!

The ants are tiny little creatures yet one of the smartest insects. Alone they cannot lift an apple but together in their multitudes they can lift anything. We live in a society that encourage us to be independent; independent men and women. I disagree and frankly and I don't want to be independent. Working together and recognsing the need for another can make life more manageable, having people who support you and work with you makes a difference if you are going to go far in life. That's a fact!

WE ALL NEED A LITTLE PUSH SOMETIMES.

Who or What will Push You to Reach Your Potential?

If I was to look back over my life, I would say that I appreciate the people who pushed me further and believed I could do better than those who just accomodated my lazy and timid ways. Alot of us do not know how much and what we are capable of unless we are pushed. A classmate of mine posted this interesting story on facebook and I just wanted to share it with you:

A man had only one daughter. When the daughter was of marriage age, the father sent news around town that all the eligible young men should come and compete in a test which would determine who was fit to marry his daughter. On that set day, all the able-bodied young men came out. Some came with paper and biro and others with cutlasses and swords. The rich man took them to his outdoor swimming pool and addressed the men:
“Any of you who can swim from one end of this swimming pool to the other would marry my daughter. In
addition, I‘ll give him 15 million dollars, a car and a house so they can start life well. I shall be waiting to meet my son-in-law at d other side. Good luck!” As the young men, all very excited at the prospect of winning, started taking off their shirts, a helicopter came over the pool and dropped snakes and crocodiles into the
pool. Immediately, all the men turned back and started wearing their shirts again. Disappointed, some of them said, ''Thats crazy,.lets see who can marry that girl ,no one will'. All of a sudden, they heard a
splash in the pool. Everybody watched in amazement as one gentleman struggled his way across, avoiding the snakes and crocodiles. Finally, he made it to the other side. The rich man could not believe it. He asked the young man to name anything he wanted but the man was still panting uncontrollably. Finally, he started to breath normally and made a request saying, ''SHOW ME THE PERSON WHO PUSHED ME INSIDE
THIS POOL!''

Somtimes you just don’t know what you are capable of doing, until you are PUSHED!!
Sometimes it takes going through the fire before realizing your potentials and reaching your goals in life.
The push might take different meanings; for some of you this push may be being sacked or made redundant at work. For others, the lose of a loved one may be that push you needed in other to do the thing you have been putting off for ages. And yet again, for others it may be a life threathening illnes which you have recovered from or a broken relationship that will PUSH YOU. Often times, the BAD moments can bring out the  BEST in you.
The secret is to maintain a positive attitude through it all.
